I begin the month indoors on Zwift. My ribs feel the work after a half hour of moderate intensity. Middle of the month I get a chest X-ray to see if I get the all clear. I’m expecting to get to go back outside. I’ll wait for good weather though. I don’t want to be swapping the indoor trainer tire and GP5000 a bunch of times.

First ride in February is a 34 minute ride on Zwift. No rib pain during or post ride. I count that as a big improvement. IN two weeks I’ll have my follow up chest x-ray but, prior I have a bone density scan. Another of those people of a certain age tests. When I go to get my x-ray I plan on having scheduled my RSV shot as well. Then probably March I’ll finally get around to the annual blood work, physical along with hearing and eye exams.

First week on the smart trainer ended with about 4 hours of training time. My last effort at 1:16. Steady improvement. Sore legs after that effort, but no rib or back pains So, progress. My weight is steady, I want it to begin melting off, but that will begin I expect with the longer and harder efforts. This last of the week’s ride was back on Kinomap.

Kinomp was not as hard of effort as I’d been doing on Zwift, but I was down on speed on the climbs. Strava results show showed intensity at 110%. Fatigue seems to be creeping back up, but fitness has inched up a bit too.

Another cold kicks me to the curb for the weekend and a bit. These last two colds have been mild compared to previous colds, but enough to make breathing at night enough of a problem so I don’t sleep well. I’m hoping that by 16th or so I can get back to training. I need to incorporate some weight training into my routine as well. That is trickier given the limited space in the garage and with the Wahoo KickR Snap taking up the space the weight bench usually used I need to move stuff outside or move the bench outside. With dry weather I can have the bench outside, with rain I figure I’ll have to carry everything upstairs to the main room. Makes for more stairs work.

Midway through the month I’m back on the bike after a bit of a fight with a short cold.

Kinomap Japan rides.

Back outdoors for the first time in the new year on the 23rd of February.

We have some good weather. Felt really weird to have the bicycle move forward under me when I pedaled. The second ride was even more fun.

First group ride on Sunday. Great ride.

My intent was to take it easy. I managed that down the river trail up to the Golden Lantern climb. Then I slowly added effort as I worked my way up the hill. Topped the hill just about maxed out having stood on the pedals a good bit of the way.

I did some fast ridding with the big ring guys. But, backed of to ride with the back only to spin away up the Aliso Creek trail along El Toro. The big rollers down Margarita back to the start were big descent efforts with some chasing. I’d lost contact with the very front fast guys, but kept up with the slower riding big ring guys. We had a good ride back. I was never strong enough to sprint or make any break.

On Monday I took a rest day with predicted rain and feeling the effort over most of my body I figure I can take the time to recover and get back at riding outdoors. Seven hours of riding last week, so I’m getting there. I figure around ten hours is the sweet spot for me at this point. As I get into summer I should be able to up that a bit.

Last ride of the month on the 29th. The day went from a light misting to drizzle to dry. The drizzle was on and off for the whole ride until I was on my way back toward the beach at San Juan Capistrano. I never got that wet, but with riding enough grit and sand I made a mess of the bike.

Totals for the month:

Distance: 611km

Climbing: 2,260m

Time: 24hours
